Apple crumble mixture with chunks of oats and apple in a white tray

We all love a slow-cooked casserole on a cold winter night, but what about a slow-cooked dessert?

This apple crumble is a healthier twist on a family favourite, with a crunchy topping and soft, sweet apples. It’s also simple to prepare, so you can pop it into the slow cooker ahead of time and get on with making dinner and enjoying time with family and friends. You can use whatever type of apple you prefer, but Golden Delicious and Granny Smith apples are both great options for baking.

Ingredients

Apple mixture
  • Butter, for greasing
  • 1kg apples, peeled and cored (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious)
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup water
Crumble topping
  • 1 1/2 cups whole oats
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 cup desiccated coconut
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 60g butter, cubed

Method

Step 1:

Lightly grease the slow cooker with butter.

Step 2:

Peel and roughly chop the apples into 3cm cubes, then add them to the slow cooker. Sprinkle spices over the top and stir to coat the apple pieces.

Step 3:

Pour in the water. You’re aiming for the water to cover 1/3 of the height of the apples.

Step 4:

To make the crumble, combine all of the dry ingredients in a bowl. Add the butter and coat it in the oat mix. Use your fingertips to combine until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Step 5:

Sprinkle the crumble over the apples, then place the lid on top and cook for 3 to 4 hours on a low heat.

Step 6:

The crumble is ready when the apples are soft and the crumble is crunchy and brown. Serve warm with a generous spoonful of low-fat yoghurt.
