Podiatrists

A podiatrist is a registered health provider trained in lower leg and foot health. Some podiatrists specialise in different areas such as sports injuries and paediatric conditions.

They diagnose and treat conditions of the foot, ankles and lower legs, including injuries, pain and associated balance issues that increase the risk of falls

FAQs

You don’t need a referral to see a podiatrist, but a GP can help you with a recommendation.

A podiatrist might help with musculoskeletal conditions such as foot and arch pain, ankle sprains and knee pain. They can also treat foot problems from underlying conditions, such as diabetes and arthritis.

Your podiatrist may help you with range of musculoskeletal issues, including:

  • foot pain
  • osteoarthritis
  • ligament sprains and muscle strains
  • joint stiffness.

A podiatrist will discuss your symptoms and medical history and assess and diagnose your condition to create a treatment plan.

Your podiatry treatment might include:

  • soft tissue interventions and mobilisation
  • advice on biomechanics (the science of movement)
  • gait analysis (assessing how the body moves, usually by walking or running)
  • foot orthoses (e.g. insoles for your shoes)
  • footwear advice.

Take your shoes that you normally wear and any shoes you play sports in to your first visit and your podiatrist will check if they are suitable and fit correctly.

You may be covered for podiatry treatment if you have eligible extras cover that includes podiatry. The gap (what you pay out-of-pocket) will depend on your cover and your physio’s fees.

For most podiatry consultations with Members First providers, you may get more money back.*

If you’re a Bupa health insurance member, you can check your cover online.

Generally, podiatry is not covered under Medicare. But, you could be eligible for a Medicare rebate with a relevant GP referral. If you have a chronic condition, your GP may refer you under a plan, such as a GP Management Plan (GPMP) or Team Care Arrangement (TCA). Speak to your GP to see if you are eligible.
