Providers

Accredited exercise physiologists

An accredited exercise physiologist (‘AEP’) is a health provider who helps manage injuries and conditions through exercise. They design safe and effective exercise programs for your MSK condition. AEPs can also help with counselling and advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

FAQs

You don’t need a referral to see an AEP, but a GP can help you with a recommendation.

You can use Exercise and Sports Science Australia’s (ESSA) Find an AEP tool.

Bupa is not associated with or sponsored by ESSA.

AEP’s will not diagnose your condition. They work alongside other health provider, like your GP, physio or specialist. AEPs help guide you through safe and effective exercise when you are dealing with various health conditions, including:

  • musculoskeletal conditions (arthritis, osteoporosis, etc.)
  • chronic or acute pain
  • cardiovascular (e.g. high blood pressure) and pulmonary disease (e.g. asthma)
  • neurological conditions
  • diabetes
  • cancer
  • obesity.

If you are not sure what exercises to do when you have an existing condition, an AEP will be able to help.

Your AEP discusses your medical and exercise history. They also do some tests that give a baseline of your physical capacity. AEPs can help you set some goals and create a tailored exercise program. They will make sure you have the right technique and form to exercise safely with an MSK or other health condition.

You may be covered for accredited exercise physiology if you have eligible cover. The gap (what you pay out-of-pocket) will depend on your cover and your OT's fees.

If you’re a Bupa health insurance member, you can check your cover online.

Generally, exercise physiology is not covered under Medicare. But, you could be eligible for a Medicare rebate with a relevant GP referral. If you have a chronic condition, your GP may refer you under a plan, such as a GP Management Plan (GPMP) or Team Care Arrangement (TCA).
