Myotherapists

A myotherapist (‘myo’) is a health provider who treats muscle pain and the associated movement and mobility problems.  They identify and treat musculoskeletal conditions with massage and other soft tissue techniques that target your muscles.

FAQs

You don’t need a referral to see a myotherapist, but a GP can help you with a recommendation.

You can use Massage & Myotherapy’s Australian Massage Directory Find a therapist tool.

A myo can support you in your recovery if your musculoskeletal pain and symptoms are stemming from a problem with your muscles and soft tissue.

Some musculoskeletal conditions that myos may treat include:

  • overuse injury (e.g. tennis elbow or shin splints)
  • sports injuries (e.g. muscle strains/tears)
  • tension headache
  • muscle pain caused by poor posture
  • some types of chronic back pain.

Your myo will complete an assessment of your condition and treatment may include a range of soft tissue techniques including:

  • deep tissue massage
  • trigger point therapy
  • stretching
  • cupping and dry needling.

Myotherapists are also trained to offer advice around healthy living.

You may be covered for myotherapy if you have eligible extras cover that covers it. The gap (what you pay out-of-pocket) will depend on your cover and your myo’s fees.

If you’re a Bupa health insurance member, you can check your cover online.

Myotherapy fees are not covered under Medicare, unless your myotherapist is also a general practitioner.
